Biscuits & Custard

Biscuits & Custard (known in Spain as Natillas con Galletas) are a very popular dessert in common Spanish households.

As with everything sweet, it is believed that Natillas originated from convents around Europe because of the simplicity of the dish, the affordability and the caloric values that it carried was a winner in humble places like these. Although there are other theories, as always, that believe the Romans brought it to Spain.

It may not be clear who brought the recipe to Spain but, in my house, my mum brought it to the table. I don’t know what it is about this dish, but it is irresistible. The mix of the biscuits and the custard is mouth watering.

Whenever my mum cooked this, the smell would make us come out of our bedrooms and gather in the kitchen inquiring what she was making and when we could eat it. Of course, you have to let it cool down which was painfully slow. But I can tell you, that if there were any small amount of left overs, freezing cold was the best time to have it. It is even better.

And now that I make if for my kids, it brings me a lot of happiness because I remember how I felt at their age and I know how what they are feeling. So, when they smell this, they leave their bedrooms to come to the kitchen and ask when they can eat it.

So please, enjoy this recipe that comes all the way from my kitchen to you.

I love cooking. I love eating even more. But what I really love are the memories created around food. We carry them through our lives and pass them on to our children and loved ones. I hope you join me in making memorable moments with these recipes.
